Health & Safety Specialist

The  Health & Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and promoting a safe and healthy work environment throughout the manufacturing facility. This position assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of safety programs, ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, conducts training, investigates incidents, and partners with employees and leaders to reduce workplace risks and foster a culture of safety.

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

JOB FUNCTIONS: (Job functions include but are not limited to the following)

  • Support implementation and continuous improvement of site safety programs, policies, and procedures. 
  • Conduct routine safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments throughout the manufacturing facility. 
  • Identify workplace hazards and collaborate with operations leadership to implement corrective actions. 
  • Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, near misses, and property damage events; determine root causes and recommend preventive measures. 
  • Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety standards. 
  • Assist in maintaining safety records, reports, permits, and regulatory documentation. 
  • Deliver safety training and orientation programs for new hires, contractors, and existing employees. 
  • Participate in emergency response planning, drills, and preparedness activities. 
  • Support lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, confined space, fall protection, PPE, and other critical safety programs. 
  • Conduct ergonomic assessments and recommend improvements to reduce injury risk. 
  • Assist with workers' compensation, case management and return-to-work processes. 
  • Track and analyze safety metrics, trends, and leading indicators to identify opportunities for improvement. 
  • Participate in safety committees and promote employee engagement in safety initiatives. 
  • Support environmental compliance activities as assigned. 
  • Maintain positive working relationships with employees, supervisors, and regulatory agencies. 
  • Other duites as assigned.

 

SCHEDULE DEMANDS

  • Office Standard: 8-hour M-F assignment; however, employee must be willing to work alternate schedules occasionally; that may include early mornings, nights, and/or weekends and be punctual while doing so.
  • Occasional overnight travel to include flying, driving, riding or by rail.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Sitting or standing for extended periods of time up to 8 hours.
  • Climbing stairs and ladders, and access elevated work areas.
  • Walking extensively throughout manufacturing facility.
  • Occasional Lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Working in office and manufacturing environment.
  • Reading computer screen or other electronic devices.
  • Use of various office hand and electrical tools or equipment.
  • Wearing required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Woking in varying temperatures, noise levels, and industrial environments.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

BACKGROUND / EXPERIENCE

  • 2–5 years of safety experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or production environment preferred.
  • Experience conducting safety audits, investigations, and training programs.
  • Experience with safety management software and reporting systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, equipment, and workplace hazards. 

 

SKILLS, EDUCATION, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field preferred or compensatory closely related work experience required
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and safety management systems.
  • Understanding of incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies.
  • Ability to influence and engage employees at all organizational levels.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Preferred certifications:
    • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification
    • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
    • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
    • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification
    • ISO45001 Internal auditor
