Health and Safety Specialist 1

Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the role of the Safety Specialist is to assist in ensuring the organization is compliant with health and safety regulations for construction and general industry. Assisting the development, implementation, and updating of required written safety and health programs, plans, and training.

Responsibilites

  • Be a health and safety role model
  • Evaluate and implement programs on workplace health and safety
  • Participate in training and implementation of site-wide safety programs such as lockout/tagout, confined space entry, fire protection and other OSHA safety compliance programs.
  • Inspect, test and evaluate workplace environments, equipment and practices to ensure that they follow safety standards and government regulations.
  • Design and implement workplace processes and procedures that help protect workers from hazardous work conditions.
  • Demonstrate the correct use of safety equipment.
  • Perform hazard analysis and recommend mitigation procedures to the facility departments.
  • Conduct routine and follow-up environmental health, safety and hazard inspections of the facilities.
  • Respond to emergency situations involving hazardous materials, fire and smoke incidents, or unknown hazards; prepare reports of findings and submits recommendations.
  • Analyze accident and incident reports for trends; make recommendations.
  • And all other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of industrial experience in a health/safety role
  • Experience with safety regulations applied in manufacturing/industry
  • Strong familiarity with OSHA regulations
  • Considerable knowledge of occupational health and safety principles and practices
  • The ability to read, analyze, and interpret regulations and documents
  • A demonstrated ability to coach employees and hold people accountable while keeping them motivated
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to build rapport and relationships with people from all levels both inside and outside of the organization, including working with local, regional, and state government employees
  • Great skill at organization, the ability to set priorities, and the knowledge to create strategies that allow you to deal with the workload in an organized way
  • Very strong administrative skills, and the ability to focus on details
  • The ability to work well and stay calm in a high pressure, fast-moving environment
  • The ability to respond to complaints or sensitive inquiries from authorities and/or the local population when needed
